SAN DIEGO, CA: Industry analyst firm DFC Intelligence has released its new worldwide PC game market forecast.  DFC predicts that that the global market for games on personal computers will grow from $32 billion in 2017 to $37 billion by 2022.  This PC Game Market forecast represents a slight lowering of previous forecasts.

“The PC game market is now in a fairly mature phase.  The next big growth driver will be the streaming of games.  However, that is still a ways off,” said DFC analyst David Cole. “Nevertheless, spending on PC games is greater than spending on all the console game systems combined.”

Asia dominates the PC game market with about 58% of total revenue.  This is driven by online usage revenue which includes subscription, micro-transactions, free-to-play and virtual item sales.  Asia accounts for 75% of online usage revenue and that is not expected to change over the next five years.

With services like Valve’s Steam, North America and Europe are strong in the digital distribution of PC game software.  The U.S., Canada, Western Europe and Eastern Europe account for 65% of total digital distribution revenue.  On the online usage side, Epic Games’ Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG Corp.) have been the most recent success stories.

Major drivers of growth over the next few years include the continued strength of eSports and more consumers investing in high-end PC hardware.  On the other hand, both streaming and virtual reality have proven to be non-factors so far.  Long-term, streaming will be a key factor but it will take some time to work out technology and business model issues.

The new Worldwide PC Game Market Forecast is available in a variety of formats.  This includes a pdf overview report, an Excel spreadsheet with data and a subscription to the DFC annual PC game service.  Additional details about the report including a table of contents is available on the DFC Intelligence website.  Members of trade, accredited and industry press may request an executive summary and direct briefing.
