APRIL 21, 2009 • First super heroes, now rock stars. What Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Lego franchise has done for Batman, Star Wars and Indiana Jones the popular game franchise will soon do for budding musicians. Lego Rock Band is expected to release in time for the holidays on current console platforms, except the PSP and PS2.
Impact: While we are big fans of Lego and Rock Band we are somewhat skeptical about mixing the two products. There are several issues we see, many revolving around the logistics of targeting the existing Rock Band audience and a new audience that doesn’t own Rock Band (will there be Lego Rock Band accessories?). However, our main concern is the old issue of companies taking a strong license and diluting it by over-publishing. We see this as a possibility for both the Lego and Rock Band franchises.
