XBR52HX909-SSEPT. 2, 2009 • Display technology that supports 3D display will be built into Sony Bravia LCD TVs starting in 2010. Sony Electronics also said its Blu-ray players, as well as VAIO PCs and the PlayStation 3 will also support the technology. Sony executives said the system would employ Active Glasses that synchronize with the display screen’s refresh rate

Impact: Some of the appeal of OnLive and Zeebo is doing away with the expensive traditional console platform entirely. TVs are getting connected, they are coming with substantially more processing power, and this is all happening very quickly. Adding 3D is just one more example. Hardware miniaturization is making some amazing technology come together – just look at where mobile phones are going. The big question is what will be the smart TV feature set that clicks with consumers. Since we suspect there will be a dizzying number of configurations proliferating in the next five years, consumers may end up more confused than excited.
