FEB. 14, 2009 • Sony reported that total worldwide sales for the PlayStation Portable system surpassed 50 million during January. The PSP first went on sale in Japan in December 2004, and was rolled out worldwide during 2005. More than 200 million UMD software units have been shipped through December 2008.

Impact: Many people have written off the PSP as a failure.  However, at over 50 million units sold the PSP has outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined (and sold more than the Wii).  In Japan, Capcom had a massive hit with the Monster Hunter franchise and some of the biggest third party portable products ever have been for the PSP.  Talk of the demise of the PSP is clearly premature.
