{"id":17224,"date":"2020-03-12T20:11:41","date_gmt":"2020-03-12T20:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/?p=17224"},"modified":"2020-03-12T20:11:41","modified_gmt":"2020-03-12T20:11:41","slug":"lego-nintendo-partnership-underwhelms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/lego-nintendo-partnership-underwhelms\/","title":{"rendered":"Lego Nintendo Partnership Underwhelms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lego and Nintendo are two of the most popular brands not just for children, but also for adults.\u00a0 Therefore rumors the two companies were partnering led to a great deal of excitement among older fans on the Internet.\u00a0 However, the initial Lego Nintendo partnership reveal was underwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>The Lego Group release announced plans to launch interactive Lego sets based on Super Mario.\u00a0 \u00a0 They described these sets as neither a video game nor a traditional Lego brick-based set.\u00a0 The full release can not put into context without watching the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fq3hw4imZ3g&amp;feature=youtu.be\">accompanying YouTube video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Basically this a small Lego set designed to resemble a basic level of Super Mario.\u00a0 The interactive part comes from some sort of digital coin collecting mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly this product is designed for young children, probably between 5 to 8.\u00a0 The Lego fans at DFC run a broad spectrum of ages, but the reaction across the board was disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Really it should not come as a big surprise.\u00a0 These are two extremely conservative companies.\u00a0 For years, Lego resisted licensing IP.\u00a0 That only changed 20 years ago with with the success of the licensed Lego Star Wars product line.\u00a0 The Star Wars sets along with Harry Potter sets (timed with the movies) helped save Lego from oblivion.\u00a0 Today Lego does all kinds of licenses.<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo still remains extremely cautious about licensing its IP for these type of products.\u00a0 For Nintendo, the initial set is a fairly low risk method of merchandising.\u00a0 Fans were expecting to see much more, such as full Mario and Zelda Lego sets.\u00a0 That may occur but it is looking unlikely.\u00a0 Clearly the challenges of a conservative company in\u00a0 Japan partnering with a similar company across the world in\u00a0 Denmark put a limit on what is feasible.<\/p>\n<p>If the initial product is a success, of course we may expect to see more.\u00a0 However, even with the young target demographic, we expect performance to be weak.\u00a0 The limited video makes the set look less exciting than either an actual Super Mario game or a full Lego set.\u00a0 Of course, price will play a major factor.\u00a0 Price has not been\u00a0 announced but our current expectation is this will be a high priced set for the value.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nintendolego.jpg\" alt=\"Lego Nintendo Partnership\" width=\"666\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nintendolego.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nintendolego-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nintendolego-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nintendolego-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nintendolego-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dfcint.com\/dossier\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nintendolego-266x266.jpg 266w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lego and Nintendo are two of the most popular brands not just for children, but also for adults.\u00a0 Therefore rumors the two companies were partnering led to a great deal of excitement among older fans on the Internet.\u00a0 However, the initial Lego Nintendo partnership reveal was underwhelming.
