Usage of The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 Show Strong Loyalty to the Music Game Genre
November 05, 2009
A new report from DFC Intelligence shows that there is strong overlap between users of music games. Over the month of September, DFC Intelligence monitored the usage of over 10,000 users for both The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 among Xbox 360 users on GamerDNA. DFC Intelligence also looked at how many users of The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 also played the earlier versions of both games, Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour.Usage figures showed that 45% of Guitar Hero 5 (published by Activision Blizzard) users also played The Beatles: Rock Band (published by MTV Games). Among The Beatles: Rock Band users 34% also played Guitar Hero 5. According to DFC analyst Jeremy Miller, “this high cross play figure indicates significant interest in music games in general among a large portion of the user base.”In looking at brand loyalty worldwide, 24% of Guitar Hero World Tour (released October 2008) users also played Guitar Hero 5 in its first month of release. In addition, 21% of Guitar Hero World Tour users also played The Beatles: Rock Band. Among Rock Band 2 (released November 2008) users, 26% played The Beatles: Rock Band in its first month of release, while 19% played Guitar Hero 5. Miller claims that “considering that this was only the first month of release for the products this is a surprisingly high overlap, that suggests strong loyalty to the concept of music games in general.”However, there are also indications that products like The Beatles: Rock Band are attracting a new user base to music games. Worldwide, 64% of The Beatles: Rock Band users had not played Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2. Only 46% of Guitar Hero 5 users had not played Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Band 2. From these preliminary results there is a strong indication that new users are continuing to come into the music game genre.DFC Intelligence also looked at GamerDNA usage of the new Activision Blizzard game DJ Hero from the period of its release on October 27, 2009 through November 2. In the U.S., 39% of DJ Hero users had also played Guitar Hero 5 and 43% had also played The Beatles: Rock Band. Based on usage figures DFC estimates that DJ Hero for the Xbox 360 sold about 100,000 units in the U.S. during October. For more detail about the full report please contact Ozzie Monge at 858-834-4340 or omonge at dfcint.com.About GamerDNAGamerDNA.com is an online community of gamers fueled by a database that tracks consumer gameplay patterns over time.About DFC IntelligenceDFC Intelligence is a strategic market research and consulting firm focused on interactive entertainment and the emerging video game, online game, interactive entertainment and portable game markets.
