This report is divided into several parts, with each part including numbers for 2001-2012:

·         Broadband Forecasts: In this section, we look at current broadband penetration in the individual countries covered and have forecasts to 2012 for the three major regions (North America, Europe and Asia).  Note that in this section our broadband forecasts for Asia include Japan.  In other sections of the report, forecasts for Japan are separated from the rest of Asia.  For a detailed look at broadband penetration in specific Asian countries subscribers to DFC Intelligence research services can see our Excel spreadsheets.

·         Video Game Hardware Forecasts:  The current video game console systems and the future video game console systems from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are capable of going online.  This section contains combined overall installed base figures for 128-bit systems (Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube) and new systems (Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Sony PlayStation 3).

·         Online Gamer Forecasts:  The number of online gamers are broken down by type of gamer (console hard-core, console moderate, console casual, PC hard-core, PC moderate, PC casual), platform (PC, console) and region of the world (North America, Europe, Asia).  Note that in this section our forecasts for Asia include Japan.  In other sections of the report, forecasts for Japan are separated from the rest of Asia.

·         Forecasts of Revenue by Platform and Region:  This section focuses on providing aggregate sales and forecasts from 2001-2012 divided by region (North America, Europe, Japan and East Asia) and platform (PC and console).  These are a more basic summary version of the overall forecasts.

·         Forecast of Revenue by Type:  This section divides the overall forecasts based on three very different types of revenue streams: subscriptions, advertising and digital distribution.  Subscription revenue and digital distribution revenue both involve voluntary consumer spending, but are very different conceptually.  Subscription revenue is more of a usage fee and is similar in concept to the rental of a product.  Generally subscription revenue products require a constant online connection and once the period of the subscription expires the consumer can no longer use the product.  Digital distribution is a consumer buying a product online AND having that product delivered digitally via an online connection.  Ad revenue includes revenue paid to a content provider by an advertiser.  It does not include games custom created for a corporate site to promote a specific product.

·         Forecasts by Genre:  This section divides up aggregate forecasts for online games based on six different game genres: massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs), first-person shooter/action (FPS/action), Sports, Fighting and Racing (often labeled Sports/Racing or SFR), Strategy/Simulation, Children and Casual.  These forecasts are divided by region (North America, Europe, Japan and East Asia) and platform (PC and console).  For a more detailed look at individual game genres see part VIII of the Online Game report.  Subscribers to the DFC research service can use the Excel spreadsheets to take a more detailed look at how revenue breaks down by type of gamer, region, revenue type and platform.

Our forecasts are not all-inclusive of the world.  North America includes only the U.S. and Canada.  Europe includes the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Portugal, and Ireland.  East Asia includes South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.  Japan is presented separately, except in our overall broadband forecasts where it is included with the rest of Asia.  Not included are all of Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, India, a significant portion of Asia and any country not specifically listed above.  However, that being said, we forecast that the covered countries will account for well over 95% of the market from now through 2012
