Game Company Revenues
12/11/02

DFC Intelligence regularly publishes detailed profiles of companies in the video game and interactive electronic entertainment industry.  In January 2003, we will be releasing a 400+ page report devoted exclusively to analyzing the leading game publishers.  This report, Market Leaders in the Video Game and Interactive Entertainment Industry, will contain a detailed 15-40 page analysis of each publishers history, strengths/weaknesses, financial performance, product lineup, development teams, marketing and distribution skills and future potential.

In anticipation of the release of this report, we thought that this month it would be a good idea to look at the relative size of the leading game companies.  The following chart shows the most recently reported revenue for 19 public game companies.  Together these companies have over $24 billion in combined annual home video and PC game revenue (for each company’s last fiscal year).

The good news for the industry is that most all game publishers have been reporting strong revenue increases (Nintendo and Sega are the two most notable exceptions).  There are now 4 companies with over $1 billion in annual revenue from home video games: Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and Electronic Arts.  However, this chart only tells part of the story.  Historically, companies in the game industry have been noted to have significant fluctuations in revenue.  Next month we will take a closer look at where we see each company headed.
